Spanish Program

Requirements For a Major

Requirements beyond Second-Year Spanish II:

Ten courses, of which eight must be conducted totally in Spanish. The other two can be taken, with permission from the Upper-Division Coordinator of the Spanish Program, from courses offered in English in the Department of Modern Languages. Four of the ten courses are required: Advanced Spanish Composition (3324), Peninsular Spanish Literary Tradition (3317), Spanish American Literary Tradition (3318), a senior research paper (either Senior Project or Honors Thesis).  The remaining courses may be chosen from anything offered, and a comprehensive examination must also be completed.

Spanish majors are encouraged to study abroad in the summer or on their own.  The Spanish Program will give credit toward the major for up to six credits for courses taken abroad at a university (not a language institute) in a Spanish-speaking country.  These courses can be in disciplines not taught regularly in our program, such as politics, economics, South-American history or art history.  Such studies have to be approved in advance by the Upper-Division Coordinator of the Spanish Program.
