The Houses I Know

Lucy Stariha,  Senior Art Thesis Exhibition

Welcome to Lucy Stariha's online showcase.

Artist Statement

The furniture never changed in the houses I grew up in. We never repainted and have used the same dishes for as long as I can remember. When I looked at these houses empty for the first time, the bare rooms were jarring and the emptiness of every corner weighed heavily. The rooms became boxes of straight lines and sharp angles.

I am trying to put this down on paper: people don’t live in houses of bright pink and baby blue, neon grass doesn’t grow on lawns, and light does not fall through opaque windows.

About the Artist

Lucy Stariha grew up in Saint Paul, Minnesota in a house with five sisters all working in the family bridal alterations business. Her house was always busy with sewing, beading, and making veils. Stariha has recently completed her Bachelor of Art majoring in Studio Art with a focus in Printmaking at the ³Ô¹ÏÍø. While at the ³Ô¹ÏÍø, worked at the Beatrice M. Haggerty Gallery as a gallery worker. She assited installing many exhibitions, and research on many projects including Braniff Graduate School'sView from the Art Village: 50 Year Retrospective. Lucy spent her senior year working in the art departments printshop under printmaking professor Steven Foutch. In the Fall, Lucy will teach art at Great Hearts in Irving and continue to make her own art. Lucy plans to return to ³Ô¹ÏÍø to have her thesis exhibition in the Fall of 2020.  In the meantime, follow Lucy Stariha on Instagram and see more of her work on her website .
