Education Concentration

The Education Concentration is designed for students who are not majoring in Interdiscipliary Studies, are interested in teaching, opportunities to gain foundational knowledge, methodology, and practical experience in the field of education. Students engaged in the Education Concentration can expect to gain:

1) a broad understanding of the K - 12 student
2) an introduction to research-based strategies for teaching critical content areas
3) proficiency in planning effective instruction and competently assessing student performance
4) opportunities to transform theory into practice with teaching experiences in actual classrooms under the supervision of university faculty and accomplished classroom teachers.

Concentration Requirements

All students seeking the Education Concentration are required to take the following 6 credit hours:

  • EDU/PSY 3327: Child Growth and Development
  • EDU 4352/5352: Educational Evaluation

Students may pursue one of two concentrations: 

Elementary Education Concentration (Early Childhood - 6th grade)

Required additional courses:

  • EDU 3147 or 3148: Reflective Teaching
  • EDU 3323 Developmental Reading AND EDU 3102: Reading Field Based Experience (concurrent enrollment required)
  • EDU 4343: Principles of Elementary Education

Pick one of the following sets of courses:

  • EDU 3325: Elementary Math Concepts AND EDU 3101: Math Field Based Experience (concurrent enrollment required)
  • EDU 3326: Elementary Science Concepts AND EDU 3102: Science Field Based Experience (concurrent enrollment required)

Total: 18 hours

Secondary Education Concentration (Grades 6 - 12)

Required additional courses:

  • EDU 4346: Principles of Secondary Education
    EDU 3111: Middle School Field Based Experience 
    EDU 3112: High School Field Based Experience
    (concurrent enrollment in EDU 4346, 3111 and 3112 is required)
  • EDU 4148 Seminar in Secondary School Clinical Teaching
  • EDU 4323/5323: Reading in the Secondary Schools
  • EDU 3357*: Instructional Practice

Total: 18 hours

*Instructional Practice are for Theology majors and requires a minimum of a half day of practical classroom experience for 14 weeks under the supervision of a cooperating teacher and a university field supervisor.

Students who have earned an education concentration and wish to pursue Texas Teacher Certification after graduation need to speak with an advisor in the Education Department about Alternative Certification and/or MAT 4+1.
